Description
In 2024 does genre really matter? Does it even exist? It certainly doesn’t by now ‘belong’ to any specific region or place it may have been born (though ‘purists’, and even at times this lowly writer would like to think it does) While the history and origins of sound and culture certainly matter, the traditions and ripple effects of any movement continue to grow and evolve over time regardless.
Powerviolence: An already heavily argued about, disjointed, perhaps even confusingly defined style born of The Bay Area / California in the late 80’s (Capitalist Casualties, Neanderthal, No Comment, Crossed Out, Infest, Spazz etc.) – Fast, pissed, politically charged and extremely heavy.
How is that then nearly 40 years later and 6000+ miles (or nearly 10,000 KM if you will) away that such a sound can continue to breed new lanes of innovation, inspiration and ferocity?
Enter Green Crack – A band of self proclaimed ’Postojna Powerviolence’ movement which has been cultivating shows in sold out venues across Slovenia – An utterly infernal ripping Slovenian force of modern PV featuring members of CarlxJohnson, Nefarious Vermin, The Snot etc. – One of the best examples of the continuing evolution (particularly in punk / hardcore) of admittedly internet driven study, replication and advancement of genre’s no longer held hostage behind any such barriers such as geography, language etc. – A barely 6 minute 7” Flexi chock full of blast-beats, stop-start song writing, circle pit inducing thrash parts, brutal breakdowns, and over the top cave-man vocals.
Bands like Green Crack are the reason Punk, Hardcore, Powerviolence or any other genre for that matter continue to morph and evolve in exciting ways, and also allow styles to grow far and wide past the origins of the places the sound may have been born. Imagine what the next generation of Postojna Powerviolence punks inspired by Green Crack will create…! May the evolution continue and also may places like Slovenia, a country all too often overlooked despite being rich with amazing music continue to breed bands as ripping as this!
